Dining in Dallas
Dining in Dallas is very much a social event, and discriminating locals take their food seriously. The sheer number of choices means that you will find many places that meet your tastes and budget: You can dine at a five star restaurant or a hole-in-the-wall cafe. On the upscale side of the equation, the city has some of the most highly acclaimed chefs in North America and therefore offers a variety of cuisine.
American
Nana
2201 Stemmons (at the Wyndham Anatole Hotel), Dallas.
You'll enjoy a panoramic view of Dallas if you dine at this five-star restaurant on the 27th floor of the Wyndham Anatole Hotel. The elegant dining room serves nouvelle American cuisine, and the menu changes frequently. Try the chestnut flour-fried lobster as an appetizer and follow with the antelope chops or roast duck.
Asian
Fishbowl
3214 Knox St., Dallas.
Its Pan-Asian dishes, combining elements of Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai cuisines, are served family style for the entire table to share. Try the mushu pork tacos with Thai basil slaw. The eccentric Zen-Den area of the restaurant has a collection of Buddhist statues and Asian art. The popular sushi bar remains open past midnight. The restaurant also serves infused imported sakes, beer and an extensive selection of wines by the glass.

Royal Thai
5500 Greenville Ave. (in Old Town Village), Dallas.
Wonderful Thai food is served in a beautiful setting. Start with the tart and spicy tom kha gai soup and expect superb service. The curried chicken wrapped in banana leaves is exceptional.
Breakfast and Brunch
Maguire's Regional Cuisine
17552 Dallas North Tollway, Dallas.
This eatery is part of a new restaurant row springing up in far north Dallas. Maguire's caters to the low-key gourmet with its international fare and laid-back atmosphere. A jazz band plays during Sunday brunch.
French
French Room
1321 Commerce St., Dallas.
The grand dining room of the Adolphus Hotel is worthy of royalty with its rococo-style, cherub-strewn ceiling and menu of French creations (although executive chef William Koval adapts the rich cuisine to lighter American tastes). Sample the lump crabmeat cakes and the famous hot chocolate cake. Service is sophisticated and unobtrusive.

The Riviera
7709 Inwood Rd. (near Lovers Lane), Dallas.
One of the city's most romantic places, this elegant French eatery is consistently one of the most acclaimed restaurants in Dallas. Its French and Mediterranean cuisine is always of the highest quality and is dynamically presented. The rack of lamb, Dover sole and duck-filled crepes are always good.
Italian
Arcodoro/Pomodoro
2798 Routh St., Dallas.
Recently relocated, this contemporary Sardinian restaurant combines two formerly separated restaurants into a building resembling a village piazza, with a stucco exterior and a marble interior. Other attractions include secluded private dining areas and wood-burning ovens framed in Italian tile. The menu features exotic flavors such as berries, myrtle leaves and calamari in squid ink. The thin-crusted pizzas are legendary.

Mi Piacci
14854 Montfort Dr., Dallas.
Feast on classic Tuscan cuisine with homemade pasta, made-to-order risotto and superb breads. Wine Spectator rated the wine list as one of the top 10 all-Italian wine lists in the country, and the food has been cited as the most authentic Italian food in Dallas. Signature dishes are ravioli funghi and osso buco.
Local and Regional Specialties
Matt's No Place
6326 La Vista Dr., Dallas.
Glimpse the real Texas at this festive eatery. Choose from elaborate party food and chicken-fried everything, including venison. Opt for appetizers of smoked beef and wild boar sausage and morsels of brisket with queso. The quail and catfish are crisp and juicy. Try the jalapeno coleslaw if you like Texas heat.
Mexican
Javier's
4912 Cole Ave., Oak Lawn, Dallas.
Still a favorite after more than two decades, Javier's provides sophisticated Mexico City-style food. It's famous for the black bean soup and flavorful red snapper mojo de ajo. It's dimly lit, with a colonial Mexico ambience and smooth, congenial service. A cigar lounge serves a variety of port wines, tequilas and cognacs.
Others
Mansion on Turtle Creek
2821 Turtle Creek Blvd., Oak Lawn (just north of downtown), Dallas.
Located in a wing of the top-rated hotel, the Mansion features the creations of chef Dean Fearing, considered a superstar of southwestern cuisine. Specialties include a warm lobster taco with yellow-tomato salsa, pecan-smoked salmon and tortilla soup.

Pyramid Grill
1717 N. Akard St. (in the Arts District, downtown), Dallas.
Updated Continental cuisine served in grand style in The Fairmont Dallas hotel's recently renovated flagship restaurant. Chef Claude Feracci specializes in grilled dishes: steak, lobster, veal and lamb chops with rich sauces and tender vegetables. Don't pass up the souffles, which are a dessert speciality. A prix fixe menu is available, as is an extensive wine list.

Star Canyon
3102 Oak Lawn Ave. (in The Centrum office building), Dallas.
The crowds have tapered off a bit, but this award-winning restaurant is still a favorite years after its splashy opening. Although famed southwestern chef Stephan Pyles is no longer in charge, the kitchen still turns out such fare as their signature bone-in cowboy rib-eye with red-chili onion rings and the tamale tart with roast garlic custard and crab meat. For dessert, try the otherworldly Heaven and Hell cake. A wine room and private dining room are available for parties.
