Nightlife in Dallas
Dallas has a lively nightlife scene, with enough in the way of performing arts and theater to entertain highbrows and more than enough bars and clubs to satisfy the young and the restless. If you've come to wrangle a mechanical bull, you may have to go to Fort Worth, but there are a couple of good honky-tonks in Big D where you can strap on your boots and your best Stetson and do some two-steppin' and Western swing dancing.
Dance Clubs
Cowboys Red River
10310 Technology Blvd. W. (near Northwest Highway and I-35), Dallas.
This dance club offers free dance lessons Sunday 5:30-8 pm.

Minc
813 Exposition Ave., Dallas.
This newly opened lounge in Exposition Park attracts a diverse crowd that mingles in the roomy club and on the huge back patio. The club's decor is a hodgepodge of styles. Deejays keep the music edgy but mellow. US$2 drink specials Monday-Wednesday.

Red Jacket Lounge
3606 Greenville Ave., Dallas.
You'll find a trendy multilevel bar with live music and a sunken dance floor. The club is open to patrons age 19 and older Wednesday-Friday and Sunday, age 21 and older on Saturday. Thursday is Swing Night. On Friday and Saturday they play '70s music. The separate Ruby Room plays house music.
Bars, Taverns and Pubs
Ginger Man
2718 Boll St., Dallas.
This popular pub is just a short walk from the posh restaurants of the trendy Quadrangle area. It's more casual than its neighbors even though it holds occasional wine and cigar tastings. An impressive 70 beers are on tap, and it also serves more than 100 bottled beers. Live local music by such western swing bands as Cowboys and Indians is performed out on the back deck.

Humperdink's Big Horn Brewery
6050 Greenville Rd., Dallas.
This is a sports landmark with a plush setting and microbrews. The full restaurant menu includes Cajun food and pastas.

Old Monk
2847 Henderson Ave. (at Willis Avenue, just north of downtown on Central Expressway), Dallas.
This laid-back pub sits among many upscale bars and restaurants in the Knox/Henderson area. The mood is warm: a Pennsylvania monastery inspired the bar's brick interior and lighting. Enjoy a beer with one of their appetizers, such as German sausage, fish and chips or the national dish of Belgium, moules frites (mussels and french fries).
Live Music
Balcony Club
1852 Abrams, Suite B, Dallas.
This blues and jazz piano bar is the perfect place to get a drink after seeing a movie at the Lakewood Theatre, located just below the bar. On tap is a mixed bag of musicians who play everything from folk to blues and jazz standards.

Poor David's Pub
1924 Greenville Ave. (at Oram Street in lower Greenville, just north of downtown), Dallas.
Poor David's is one of the coziest, most conveniently located bars in town. It's been around for more than two decades, and it features good, lesser-known musical acts who attract lively fans. Ray Wylie Hubbard, the Dixie Chicks, Janis Ian and Kevin Welch have all played there.

Sambuca
2618 Elm St., Dallas.
This expensive Mediterranean supper club offers live jazz nightly by local and national musicians. The cocktails are high dollar, but the music is worth it. Multiple locations, but we like the Deep Ellum spot, reminiscent of a Chicago speakeasy.
The Performing Arts
The Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center
2301 Flora St. at North Pearl, Dallas.
It is home to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, a very respectable outfit led by maestro Andrew Litton. The I. M. Pei-designed auditorium has excellent acoustics and a spectacular pipe organ.

The Dallas Theater Center
Kalita Humphreys Theater, 3636 Turtle Creek Blvd., Dallas.
It is a little gem built by the famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright and the best place for theater in the Dallas area. Local and touring productions, some fairly adventurous by Dallas standards (like Angels in America), are on the card here.
